SAGE V21 and Above - Using Network Company Files

SAGE Data Service

Since version v21 for SAGE Accounts (SAGE Line 50) the ability to host a company file from an network shared folder was removed. Well, not exactly removed, but a BIG restriction was put on the ability to keep your datafiles where you want them.

The SAGE DATA SERVICE is now required to be running on the share host PC. This is a free download from SAGE (Link below, or search for SAGE DATA SERVICE DOWNLOAD)

The problem is, this is a Windows only application, so if you're running a Linux flavour server like many small businesses do, you're a bit stuck.

There is a Linux version available from the SAGE Canada help site, but this appears to be out of date and no longer supported.

There have been issues reported by users who have the SAGE Data Service running on a server with more than one IP address, and some issues with the service failing to start, or consuming all the server resources. Also there have been problems with users not correctly configuring any server firewalls to allow the SAGE service to respond to clients on the network.

And of course, any additional software introduces a new bunch of potential fail points and vulnerabilities.

If you choose to 'host' the data from a network PC, you'll need to make sure the PC is updated and constantly available, and that the data is backed up successfully in your backup plan.

If you have any issues getting SAGE Data Service up and running and you're not getting any help from SAGE, contact us!
